The submission stays with you. The AB+C account, the contractor registration behind it and the licence the permit is issued under all sit on the installer’s side of the line, and the same is true of the Austin Energy application. The Auxiliary Power route, and the two desks behind it

Austin issues no product called a solar permit. PV is filed in Austin Build + Connect as an Auxiliary Power Electrical Permit — application type Electrical, work type Auxiliary Power. Three documents upload with it: the Distributed Generation Planning Application, the wire diagram and design packet, and an Interconnection Agreement, now required for all residential distributed generation and for commercial systems at or above 500 kW-ac.

That single filing feeds two reviewers. The city looks at it as an electrical permit; Austin Energy looks at the interconnection side under its own rules and its own thresholds. They are not sequenced the way San Antonio sequences CPS Energy ahead of the city — in Austin they run alongside each other, which is faster when the packet is right and confusing when it is not, because a hold at one desk does not always announce itself at the other.

One structural quirk worth knowing: residential PV does not go to plan review at all, while commercial work inside city limits does. Does Austin accept SolarAPP+?

No. SolarAPP+ appears nowhere in Austin Energy’s solar permitting manual, the city’s permit-type catalogue, its standalone-permit page or its solar inspections page. That is an evidentiary negative rather than a statement from the city, so it is worth re-checking before your first submission of the year — but there is no instant-approval track here today.

The third-party route Austin actually offers

What Austin has instead is more useful than most installers realise, and it is genuinely underused.

Texas Senate Bill 1202, codified at Local Government Code §247.0025 and effective September 1, 2025, lets a qualified third-party professional perform the document review and inspection for a home backup power installation — generating, storage and standby equipment serving a one- or two-family dwelling, connected at 600 volts or less. Austin has implemented it. The route is a Repair Stand-Alone Permit in AB+C accompanied by a Third-Party Review Compliance Letter, and the permit is issued within three business days of the notice of third-party approval. A Third-Party Inspection Approval Letter is then required before the final inspection.

Two honest caveats. First, it covers home backup power installations as the statute defines them — it is not a general-purpose fast lane for every solar project. Second, and more important for scheduling: SB 1202 reaches the permitting authority, not the utility. It does nothing to the Austin Energy interconnection review running in parallel. A three-business-day permit sitting next to an open interconnection application is not a three-business-day project.

How long does Austin take to review?

There is no published answer at either desk, and that is a finding rather than a gap in our research. The City of Austin publishes residential plan-review targets covering remodels, additions and demolitions, and lists no solar category. Austin Energy publishes no review turnaround for its distributed generation application. The only published solar-adjacent figure is inspection scheduling notification, described as usually within three business days.

So we do not quote a city-side or utility-side timeline, because none exists to quote. What we commit to is our own: 2–3 business days for a standard set, 1–2 on Fast Roof, 1 business day with a Roof Order or EagleView XML, and comment responses handled free inside the six-month revision window. The code timeline your Austin submittal lands on

Austin adopted the 2026 NEC by Ordinance No. 20260423-048 on April 23, 2026, effective September 1, 2026; the 2023 NEC governs until then. The city is also on the 2024 IBC, IRC and IECC, effective July 10, 2025, along with the rest of the 2024 I-code family and the 2024 uniform mechanical and plumbing codes.

That makes Austin one of the earliest 2026 NEC adopters in the state — and worth separating from the statewide picture, which is less settled than it is usually reported. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation proposed adopting the 2026 NEC effective September 1, 2026 in a Texas Register notice published in March 2026, but the codified rule still reads 2023 and final adoption is not confirmable from a primary source. Austin’s adoption is its own ordinance and does not depend on the state’s.
